About grounding
Grounding (sometimes called earthing) is simply the practice of making an
electrical connection between your body and the Earth's surface. The most
natural way is walking barefoot on grass, soil, sand or other natural ground.
Grounding products let you enjoy a similar connection while you're indoors.
Our grounding sheets, for example, uses very fine conductive stainless-steel fibres
inside the sheet that's linked by a cord to the earth connection of a power
outlet — so you stay connected to the earth while you sleep.
A grounding sheet is bedding that contains stainless steel conductive
fibres. When it's connected to Earth via a grounding cord, it creates a gentle
pathway between you and the ground.
The sheet only connects to the earth/ground pin of a properly grounded
outlet — never to the live electricity supply.
The conductive material in the sheet is linked to Earth through the
grounding cord and your home's grounding system.
You don't need to touch the conductive fibres directly. Grounding can happen
through ordinary bedding and clothing (though the exact connection can vary a
little depending on materials and conditions).
That means you can treat your grounding sheet just like a normal mattress
protector or extra layer — no need to sleep directly on the conductive surface.
Grounding has been studied for more than 20 years. While the research is still growing, a number of peer-reviewed papers have reported measurable physiological changes linked to grounding.
Some of the earliest work built on the observations of Clint Ober, a pioneer in modern grounding research. A 2004 pilot study by Ghaly and Teplitz looked at grounding during sleep using conductive mattress pads. Twelve participants slept grounded for eight weeks, and the researchers noted changes in cortisol patterns along with improvements in reported sleep, pain and stress.
Other studies have explored effects on heart rate, breathing rate, blood oxygenation, skin conductance and circulation. There's also research on grounding during sleep and through indirect contact, which supports the practical idea of using conductive textiles under normal bedding.
Beyond the formal studies, many people simply share that they feel better — better sleep, more restfulness, less discomfort, or a greater sense of calm. Personal stories aren't the same as controlled evidence, of course, but they're part of why interest in grounding keeps growing and why further research is worthwhile.
We think it's helpful to look at both: the science that's been done so far, and the everyday experiences of people who've made grounding part of their lives.

Using your sheet
Simply place the grounding sheet on your mattress following the instructions
that come with your product. Plug the grounding cord into the sheet, then plug
the other end into a properly grounded outlet.
You can (and most people do) use it under your normal bedsheet. There's no
need to sleep directly on the conductive material.
No — direct skin contact isn't required.
Grounding can happen through ordinary bedding and clothing. Lots of people simply put their grounding sheet under a regular bedsheet and sleep in their usual pyjamas.
Skin contact can create a slightly more direct pathway, but it's not necessary for the sheet to work as intended.
Absolutely. Wear whatever you normally wear to bed.
Most people keep their usual sleepwear and bedding routine. You don't need to change a thing about how you sleep.
Yes — that's exactly how most people use them.
Grounding sheets are designed to fit into your normal bedding setup. Lay a regular bedsheet over the top, sleep in your usual pyjamas, and you're good to go. The conductive material stays connected to Earth through the cord the whole time.
Yes. Grounding sheets are made for regular, overnight use.
Many people leave theirs connected all night because the benefits people talk about most often seem linked to consistent time spent grounded. There's no single "correct" amount of time that works for everyone.
If you're new to grounding, you might like to start gradually — perhaps just part of the night at first — and build up as you get used to it.
A small number of people notice temporary changes when they first begin, especially if they jump straight into long sessions. Some describe this as a short adjustment period. There's limited formal research on it, so we don't have a firm medical explanation or a recommended maximum.
If anything feels off after you start, simply reduce your time or take a break and see how you feel. If symptoms continue or concern you, it's always wise to check in with a health professional.
There's no one-size-fits-all timeline.
Research has looked at everything from short sessions to continuous overnight grounding over several weeks. People's personal experiences vary just as widely — some notice changes in sleep or how they feel within a few nights, others after a few weeks, and some don't notice an obvious difference at all.
The best approach is to give yourself enough time to settle into a consistent routine rather than judging the experience after just one or two nights.
Safety & electricity
Yes. HolyGrounding sheets connect only to the earth/ground pin of your electrical system — never to the live power supply.
All our sheets have a grounding cord that includes a built-in current-limiting safety resistor. This is an extra layer of protection designed to limit current if something ever went wrong electrically.
Your power outlet does need to be correctly installed and properly grounded. If you're unsure about your home's wiring, you can use a socket tester to quickly check.
No. The sheet is not connected to the live electrical supply at all.
It only connects to the earth/ground pin. The whole point is to give your body a pathway to Earth — not to bring mains electricity into the bed.
The easiest way is to use a simple outlet/ground tester (available at most hardware stores).
If you're not sure about your home's electrical system, a licensed electrician can confirm it for you.
Yes. As long as the outlet you're using is correctly grounded, a grounding sheet works just as well upstairs as it does on the ground floor. The connection doesn't rely on physical closeness to the earth outside as all power outlets in a house are ultimately connected to the earth rod.
We recommend unplugging the grounding cord from the wall during a thunderstorm — just as a sensible precaution.
Even though the sheet isn't connected to live power, lightning can create extreme voltages and surges in electrical and grounding systems. Simply disconnecting until the storm has passed is the best option.
Yes, you can use both in the same bed, provided you follow the instructions for each product and your electric blanket is in good condition.
They do different jobs: the grounding sheet only connects to earth, while the electric blanket is a mains-powered appliance.
Avoid any electric blanket that is damaged, has exposed wiring, or shows signs of wear. If you're unsure about your particular setup, a licensed electrician can give you peace of mind.
If you have an implanted electrical or medical device, please speak with your doctor or the device manufacturer before using any grounding product. Holy Grounding products are wellness tools and are not a substitute for medical advice or treatment.
Washing & care
Yes — they're designed to be washed just like regular bedding.
Holy Grounding sheets use 316L stainless-steel conductive fibres, chosen for their conductivity, durability and resistance to corrosion.
Just follow the care instructions that come with your product so the conductive properties stay strong and the sheet lasts as long as possible.
We recommend skipping fabric softener. Softeners can leave residues on the fibres that may reduce conductivity over time. A mild detergent and the care instructions supplied with your sheet are all you need.
We recommend avoiding chlorine bleach unless your specific product instructions say otherwise. Harsh chemicals can affect the fibres and shorten the life of the conductive material.
Check the drying instructions that came with your sheet. In general, avoid very high heat — excessive temperatures can wear textile materials more quickly.
Because most people use the grounding sheet under a regular bedsheet rather than sleeping directly on it, it usually doesn't need washing as often as ordinary bedding.
Think of it more like a mattress protector: wash it periodically and whenever it needs it, rather than every time you change the top sheet. How often will depend on your use, your bedroom environment, and whether another layer is covering it.
Performance & troubleshooting
The simplest and most reliable way is to check the electrical connection with a proper grounding or continuity tester.
You shouldn't expect to feel any electrical sensation when everything is working correctly.
That's completely normal — and expected.
Grounding isn't something you're meant to "feel." No tingling, warmth or other sensation doesn't mean the sheet isn't connected. If you'd like reassurance, just test the connection with a grounding tester.
A few common things can interrupt the connection:
- a disconnected or damaged grounding cord
- an outlet that isn't properly grounded
- build-up or contamination on the conductive surface
- damage to the conductive fibres
- a loose connection somewhere in the system
Start by checking the cord and connections, then test the system following the instructions that came with your product.
They can sometimes reduce conductivity at the point of contact. For the most reliable connection, keep the sheet clean and let lotions, creams or oils absorb fully before you settle in for the night.
Grounding & health
Sleep is one of the areas where grounding has been studied, and it's also one of the benefits many people mention most often.
The 2004 pilot study by Ghaly and Teplitz reported improvements in sleep-related symptoms among participants who slept grounded for eight weeks. Other research has looked at physiological changes linked to stress and the body's autonomic response.
Many people choose to make grounding part of their nightly routine and simply report that they sleep more soundly, wake feeling more refreshed, or feel better rested overall.
Inflammation is one of the physiological areas researchers have explored in relation to grounding.
Anecdotally many people have reported significant inflammation improvements and reviews have addressed possible mechanisms involving the body's interaction with the Earth's electrical environment. Studies have reported changes in certain physiological and inflammatory measures.
Here are some case studies you may be interested in reading about
Pain is another area that has attracted both research interest and plenty of personal reports.
The early sleep study by Ghaly and Teplitz noted reductions in participants' reported pain, and later work has looked at exercise-related muscle soreness and other pain-related measures.
Many people who use grounding products also say they experience less discomfort or recover more comfortably after physical activity.
As always, the research is still developing and individual experiences differ. Grounding is best thought of as a complementary wellness practice that some people choose to add alongside the other things they do to support how they feel. Here is some information from a pain specialist who has had success with grounding.
A lot of people turn to grounding simply because they feel calmer, more settled or more relaxed when they're connected to Earth.
Here is a report from a psychiatrist who uses grounding to help her clients.
Stress-related measures have also been studied. The early sleep research noted improvements in participants' subjective reports of stress, and other controlled work has observed changes in physiological parameters associated with grounding.
Experiences vary from person to person. For many, grounding is simply a gentle, relaxing addition to their bedtime routine and overall approach to wellbeing.
Buying a grounding sheet
A grounding sheet is designed mainly for use in bed, while a grounding mat is generally intended for sitting, standing or working at a desk. Both use conductive material to create a connection with Earth — they just fit different parts of your day.
Choose a size that fits your mattress comfortably.
The exact coverage isn't critical for grounding to occur — you don't need every part of your body over the conductive material at all times. A sheet that gives you a practical, comfortable area of contact while sitting nicely on the mattress is ideal.
Our sheets use 316L stainless-steel conductive fibres.
316L stainless steel is a highly durable, corrosion-resistant material widely used in medical and other demanding applications. It offers excellent conductivity while standing up beautifully to everyday use and repeated washing. We chose it specifically for that combination of performance, durability and longevity.
A well-made grounding sheet should give you many years of reliable use when cared for properly.
Because we use 316L stainless-steel fibres — known for their durability and corrosion resistance — the conductive performance is designed to last. Actual lifespan will naturally depend on how often the sheet is used, washed and handled, but the materials are chosen for long-term performance.
